Top Drive Drilling Rig
Top Drives are mechanical devices that are used to rotate the pipe on the drilling rig during the drilling process. The purpose of this process is to turn the drill string in a clockwise manor which drills the borehole.
This allows greater advancement each day in the drilling process as it travels up and down the derrick vertically.
The Top Drive is the motor that hangs or is suspended from the mast (or derrick) of the drilling rig. They are an alternative to the rotary table. Where the rotary table can only drill up to 30 feet sections, these Drilling Rigs that are set up with this type of equipment can drill 60 to 90 feet strands at a time.
