BOP stands for Blow-Out Preventer, and these are placed at the top of the well. It is a valve that can be turned off remotely in most cases, so that the drilling crew may regain control. Then measures can be taken to restore the correct density and stabilize the pressure of the reservoir. Blow-Out Preventers are a crucial component for the crews security. They are tested regularly (ranging from daily to monthly depending on the well and the risk factors), to ensure they are functioning properly. BOP’s come in many shapes, sizes, and pressure ratings.
